The Echo of Potential Talent
Have you ever known someone has a gift, a latent talent waiting to emerge? We feel its echo, we sense its potential, but it’s not until we see it made real that we understand its true power.
I’ve had the wonderful experience of having two talented children. In their process of growing up, they have gradually shown flashes of their talent in different activities, and while every parent has the loving habit of seeing their actions as great feats, there is a moment when everything changes. It’s precisely when you see those talents turned into tangible creations that the feeling of love evolves into an experience of pure astonishment.
That just happened to me. My youngest daughter, having recently turned 14, showed me an assignment from her class that was received as a “masterpiece.” Honestly, my first reaction was to think of the teachers’ praise as a gesture of support for a diligent and intelligent student. However, when I took the time to read her work, I was met with a huge surprise.
To put this in context: my daughter wrote this story for her English class, having just started her second year of school in the United States. Although she is shy and quiet, it’s easy to see her intelligence and dedication. The fact that she could create this, in a second language and in such a short time, is precisely the kind of tangible action that transforms potential into an undeniable fact.
And here is the proof. The harvest of that seed of talent. I present to you, “Letters from the Future.”
LETTERS FROM THE FUTURE

One afternoon, like any other, Nora was returning from college when her phone rang.
“Hello…” Nora said.
“Hello, excuse me, is this Nora Kimura?”
“Yes… It’s me. What’s up?”
“I regret to inform you that your parents just lost their lives.”
“What… How did it happen?”
“A car hit them at a traffic light. My condolences.”
TWO MONTHS LATER
Time passed after the accident. Nora had to take her mother’s place in caring for her sister, Lily. Nora managed to find a job that allowed her to support her sister in exchange for dropping out of school.
It was a simple job, but still somewhat complicated for a girl who had never worked.
“Lily, I’m home from work,” Nora said, opening the front door.
“Welcome!” Lily said. “A letter arrived at the door today, saying it’s for you.”
Nora, curious, went to look at the letter. It didn’t have an address or say who it was from, but she decided to open it anyway.
DON’T LET LILY OUT UNTIL TOMORROW
Nora was confused. She didn’t understand who could have sent that letter or why someone would put such a strange message in it. As Nora was trying to figure out what to do with the note, Lily spoke up.
“Hey, sis! My friend is having a party at her house today. She asked if you would let me go?”
Nora, who was still thinking that the letter didn’t matter, was about to say yes, but…
“No… you can’t go.” Somehow, Nora had a bad feeling about the letter and decided to listen to it, feeling that it was the right thing to do.
The next day, Nora was watching the news while thinking about the letter when…
Knock, knock.
Someone was at the door.
“Coming,” said Nora, thinking about who could be knocking on the door so early on a Saturday.
“Who is this?” asked Nora as she opened the door.
Nobody was there. Nora started thinking about a kid possibly playing a prank, but then she realized.
There, on the floor, was another letter. When Nora opened it, she noticed that it was the same handwriting as the first one, but this one said:
DON’T GO TO WORK FRIDAY AT YOUR PROJECT
Nora was totally scared. She didn’t understand these letters. Probably, someone was trying to play a joke, but the way the letter was written made Nora feel horrified. She truly thought that something terrible was about to happen.
“Hey sis,” said Lily, meanwhile, as she brushed her black hair. “Do you remember yesterday, when my friend had her party and you didn’t let me go? Well, she told me that on the route I was going to take, a big accident happened.”
“What!?” asked Nora.
“Yeah, I mean, I could have died there,” said Lily in the most terrified way possible.
Nora remembered what the letter said: “Don’t let Lily out until tomorrow.” That memory gave her chills. She remembered the new letter she had in her hands. Seeing what could have happened to Lily, she decided to follow what the letter said again.
The days continued to pass. Each day brought a different order, telling Nora what she had to do or not do. For example, “Go to work earlier so they will give you a raise,” or “Take an umbrella, it is going to rain.” Everything that was said in the letters always came true. On the day of the second letter, Nora was fired. That same week, she realized the letters were never wrong.
But one day, Nora grew curious about who was leaving the letters. She tried to communicate through them, but the letters didn’t answer. So she decided to do something else: she tried to record the person who left the letters, not knowing that this would be the beginning of her end.
On her first try, Nora expected the camera to record something about the person who wrote the letters, but she got a surprise when she found a new letter surrounded by the totally destroyed camera. The letter said:
Don’t do it again or else…
After that day, something changed. The letters started to contain threats: “If you don’t do it, something bad will happen.”
“Don’t go to work,” said the latest letter, but as Nora started walking, a car hit her. That wasn’t the worst part. The worst was that, once a week, the letters would say: “If you don’t do what I say… I KEEP LILY.”
Nora, although she had no proof, was sure that if she didn’t listen, the sender would take Lily away. Her fear grew until that letter arrived.
“Lily, I’m back,” said Nora, entering the house, but there was no response. “Lily?”
Lily wasn’t there. Instead, there was a letter, but this one was different—it was written in blood.
Follow the path and decide who dies
Then Nora noticed a path of blood leading outside the house. She followed the path hurriedly until she found it: a humanoid figure with long limbs and no face.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” screamed Nora when she saw Lily lying unconscious.
The thing, even though it didn’t speak, Nora could understand it.
“NOW THAT YOU HAVE COME, YOU MUST CHOOSE,” said the creature.
“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?” Nora asked in shock.
“YOU WANTED TO KNOW SO MUCH,” said the creature. “NOW, CHOOSE, OR I WILL CHOOSE FOR YOU.”
“Okay… just take me, but leave her alone…”
The next day
“What happened? Where is my sister?” Lily asked, trying to remember what had happened the day before.
“You’re in the hospital,” said the nurse. “We found you on the street.”
“Where’s my sister?” asked Lily.
“She… she disappeared,” said the nurse with pity, “but she left this for you.” It was a letter.
Hey Lily,
I’m sorry for what has happened. I need to go, for a good reason… Anyway, what I want to say is that I LOVE YOU.
You are the best sister anyone could ask for. That’s why I’m asking you to continue your life and leave me behind.
With love, Your big sister
THE END
Final Thoughts: Harvesting Creative Courage
Beyond the shocking ending and the suspense that kept us on edge, what truly resonates is the act of creation behind this story.
Having an idea is easy; it’s a comfortable, safe spark that lives in our minds. The real challenge, the true act of courage, lies in taking that spark and turning it into a fire. That is creative courage: the determination to sit down, face the blank page, shape the characters, solve the plot, and, hardest of all, write the words “The End.”
This story is no longer an abstract idea in its author’s mind. It is a tangible work. For her, it’s no longer a “maybe I could write something,” but an “I wrote this.” Whenever doubt tries to whisper that she can’t, she will have this irrefutable proof that she can. Every finished project becomes a brick in the wall of our confidence, a wall that protects us from the fear of creating.
And this leads us to an inevitable question: What is the “story” that lives inside of you? It might not be a thriller; perhaps it’s a business plan, a song, a recipe, or a garden. Whatever it is, your talent will remain just an echo until you decide to make it tangible. The world is full of potential, but it is action that truly transforms it.
So today, I invite you to harvest your own courage. Take your idea, give it form, and share it. You’ll be surprised by the power you discover when your talent stops being an echo and becomes a voice.

Wow! Great writing where imagination, creativity and psychological and subconscious reminders put us in front of the possibility of “Anything can happen, since Human life is as fragile as a leaf, as the breeze, as the wind!”. And since these possibilties of anything can happen are infinite, they are here to make us more humble, more aware of the fleeting moments with our family, friends and lovers and , like an invitation to Enjoy life at its fullest, this essay, from a 14 years old reminds us that Maturity does not come with age. It is a gift of the Universe to any chosen one. THANKS FOR SHARING
Dear Jean Elie,
Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful and profound comment. I am truly moved by how you connected the story to such universal themes—the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our fleeting moments. You’ve captured the very essence of what makes storytelling so powerful.
Your words, “Maturity does not come with age. It is a gift of the Universe,” are beautiful and incredibly encouraging. I will be sure to share your comment with my daughter, Danna. I know it will mean the world to her and inspire her to keep writing.
Thank you again for taking the time to not only read but to so deeply engage with the post. We truly appreciate it.
Muy buena historia, Danna, sigue adelante, me encantó, lo lei todo, me fascinó, no me sorprende de ti, eres brillante.
